Chapter Thirteen

My dad was waiting for me outside the office, clutching two cups of coffee. He smiled when he saw me, visibly pleased I had showed up. Nate stopped unloading boxes at the far end of the long driveway and stood to watch me as I climbed out of my truck.

I yanked the coffee from my dad without saying a word. During the drive over, my confused feelings had turned into anger at myself for letting Stella get under my skin. For letting her do that when she wasn’t in the right frame of mind. She should have remained James’s sister, but there was no way she would ever be just that again. I couldn’t erase her taste, erase the phantom pain from my hardness trying to rip my zipper apart.

Dad frowned, fixing me with a narrowed look when he noticed I was still dressed in the same neat clothes as yesterday, though they were much more wrinkly now. “We have some things to do before our first meeting in thirty minutes. And you should get changed.” I kept flicking my eyed towards the house where Nate was working. My dad must have noticed, as he said, “Go talk to him. I’ll be inside when you are ready.” He slapped me on the back and walked into his office, leaving me standing alone with my coffee. I wandered over to Nate, who dropped the boxes he’d been moving when he noticed me.

“So, you’re here.” He wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm.

I threw the coffee mug into the trees next to me, suppressing a yell, then rubbed both my hands over my face, leaning my back against the pallets next to me. “I’m such a fucking idiot,” I growled, not sure I should tell him the whole truth.

“What did you do this time?” he grunted, rolling his eyes.

“Nothing, just… I don’t know. She kissed me.” There was no way I was telling Nate the full story.

“She kissed you or you kissed her? There’s a major difference there,” Nate said, barely looking up from what he was doing.

“She kissed me. I think. Fuck, I’m so confused.”

Nate put the tools down and turned to me, crossing his arms over his chest. “Dude, I knew this was going to happen as soon as Kasey mentioned her.”

“Knew what?”

“That you’d go thinking with your dick again. But with you, your dick somehow morphs into your heart. So you want to tell me again how it was just her kissing you?” He raised an eyebrow, daring me to tell him anything but the truth.

“Grayson!” my dad called from the office, sparing me from words I didn’t want to say out loud yet. Lies I didn’t want to tell him. I spun on my heels as Nate let out a snort.

“We’re not done with this conversation,” he called before I walked inside the office.

I didn’t think we were, but right now, I needed to put all of this Stella shit to the side and focus on work.
